REVOLUTION RAIL CO | OPEN SPACE INSTITUTE (OSI)

Our partnership with Open Space Institute maintains potential for commercial rail use and allows for future creation of a 30-mile four-season, multi-use recreational trail.

INCREASED ACCESS TO RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The purchase of the former Saratoga-North Creek rail line by Revolution Rail Co., with the support of OSI, could create new opportunities for outdoor recreation in the region. It benefits everyone who enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and rail tours, and who may not have had access to these opportunities before.

PRESERVATION OF NATURAL AREAS

The Open Space Institute is committed to protecting and conserving natural areas, and our partnership with them will help preserve important natural resources for future generations. This will benefit all of us who value outdoor spaces and want to see them protected and maintained.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS

The creation of new recreational opportunities and the protection of natural areas will also have positive economic impacts on the region. Increased tourism and outdoor activity will generate economic activity and create jobs, benefiting anyone who live and work in the area.

ABOUT OPEN SPACE INSTITUTE

The Open Space Institute protects land for people, for wildlife, forever. Over five decades, OSI has partnered in the protection of 2.3 million acres in the eastern United States – and the Adirondacks have been one of its longest standing, core conservation geographies. To date, OSI has protected more than 55,000 acres across the region, including the breathtaking 10,000-acre “NL-Tahawus” property, home to the headwaters of the Hudson.  Today, OSI’s Adirondac Upper Works property serves as the most popular southern gateway to the High Peaks. Other significant projects include protection of the Split Rock Wildway wildlife corridor, acquisition of the Marion River Carry, and the addition of the Finch Pruyn Lands and Mount Treambleau to the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

At the end of 2022, OSI seized the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to partner with the Revolution Rail Co. in the acquisition the 30-mile Tahawus rail line, providing people with the unique experience of rail biking through magnificent and remote Adirondack woodlands.
