ABOUT SOUTH FORK
Mountain Town Charm
Set in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, South Fork is a year-round base for outdoor recreation. With nearby trails, waterfalls, fishing spots, Wolf Creek skiing, and drives along the Silver Thread Byway, it offers big views, local wildlife, and small-town hospitality.
A Place in History
The Capote band of the Ute people once lived seasonally throughout the San Luis Valley. By the 1870s, South Fork shifted from a stage stop to a hub for timber, ranching, and agriculture, especially after the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad arrived in 1882. Incorporated in 1992, the town now blends its Indigenous roots and railroad past with modern tourism.
Adventure All Around
Located near the headwaters of the Rio Grande, one of North America’s longest rivers at over 1,800 miles, South Fork offers quick access to lakes, trails, hot springs, and alpine scenery. Creede, Pagosa Springs, and Great Sand Dunes National Park are nearby, making it a launch point for Colorado exploration.
